Literacy:

During class today, we talked about proofreading symbols and then used those symbols to edit an error-filled creepy Halloween story. Then, Ms. Baker read “The 11:59″ to prepare students to begin writing their own Halloween-esque stories. We will begin drafting those stories during next class.

Homework:

1. Identity Portfolios are due on Wednesday (A) or Thursday (B). Students need to sit down with an adult for editing help. That adult must sign the bottom of their draft. All students have a handout to remind them of the requirements of the Identity Portfolio.

2. Signed 2nd Quarter Independent Reading Contract (handout) and 1st Quarter Independent Reading Contract Review (handout) are due on Wednesday (A) or Thursday (B)

Mathematics:

Algebra 8-

Today in class we discussed ACE(2) #6,7, and 9, and the end of problem 2.3.

Next, we discussed what was going to be on the upcoming Investigation 1 & 2 quiz (Friday).

Last, we finished some of Problem 2.4 in class.

Homework:

  • Finish Problem 2.4

Science

Today in class we learned a little bit about how composting works. We learned that the actual breakdown is due to the organisms within the compost pile. While we will later go into details about these organisms, right now we are learning the essential fact: these organisms need carbon (browns) and nitrogen (greens).

Homework:

We have plenty of browns (leaves) in our compost bins. We need greens (grass). Without grass, our poor microorganisms will starve and fail to produce good compost.

BRING IN BAGS OF LEAVES AND GRASS CLIPPINGS. We need more browns and greens for our compost bins!

Social Studies:

Homework: Complete detailed Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Egypt and Meaopotamia.

Test on River Valley Civilizations: A day – Thursday, Nov. 8; B day – Friday, Nov. 9

Thanks to the following students for doing their part to make the world a bit brighter for the residents of Ronald McDonald House: Stephanie Avery, Niesha Woods, Cara Friend, Micah Goodman, Brett Rapponotti, Tom Dwyer, Ben Williams, Nikki Tomova, Matthew Millett, and Jackie Leong.

  2. Collect two or three grocery bags of leaf and lawn clippings. We want the greens (grass) and browns (leaves). The more, the better. Without these ingredients, we have no compost.
  3. Collect five leaves (as different as possible) and bring them to class in a ziploc bag. WE DO NOT WANT CRUMBLY, DRY LEAVES! If it crumbles let it be. If a tree has leaves of different colors, bring one of each. If you find four or five trees each with different color leaves, bring one of each of them.
  4. Be proud of yourselves. The work you did for your presentations was tremendous and their quality was outstanding!
