This week’s schedule is A B X B A. On Wednesday (the X day), we will be conducting research and planning 8-South Community Service activities. Students will attend all of their electives. Next week’s schedule is B A C. A “C” day is where classes are NOT blocked.

Ms. Baker will be gone from Nov. 22nd through Nov. 27th, as she is presenting at the National Council of Teachers of English annual conference in New York City. Ms. Millican, Wydown’s Writing Intern, will be substituting during Ms. Baker’s absence. If you need to reach Ms. Baker for any reason, please send an email, as she will be checking that during her absence.

Today we used core time to learn about social issues affecting our world. Students conducted library research in an effort to better understand at least one issue of significance. They researched areas such as homelessness, global warming, and child labor. Students also read articles about teenagers who have made their mark on their world by dedicating time to social concerns. Finally, students engaged in a true service project–cleaning up the 8-South garden, which was planted by students from last year’s 8-South team. It was an incredible day, filled with energy, learning, and positive spirit.

Tomorrow and on Friday, students have Explore (standardized) testing. They will need a calculator. Students will also need to turn in their three Identity drafts for Literacy, which they have been working hard on in class (and for homework). Finally, all students have a social studies test tomorrow afternoon.

We would like to thank students for their participation in today’s activities. We believe your excellent behavior and insightful discussions today will serve as a wonderful springboard into the community service opportunities we are planning. We also hope you feel comfortable creating your own community service ideas and are more than happy to help you turn those ideas into actions.  On the far right you will find we have added to the “Community Service Page.”  The addition includes a copy of today’s presentation, comments your fellow students have written, and instructions on how to get free candy (not really!).

Just as a reminder, Thursday will be a B Day. This means that your work assigned on Tuesday will be due. Consult yesterday’s entry if you are unsure what the assignments were.
